Hitchhikers

On one night, my mother was seated near the front and, as a result of probably too much Gargleblaster, responded loudly to every rhetorical question, which the rest of the audience loved and laughed along with, but deeply embarrassed me and impaired my concentration on the many, many lines we had to remember.

Cindy Oswin is a British writer, actress, voice actress, opera librettist and voice coach. She provided the voice of Trillian, the Mice, and other female voices in the LP version of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Oswin was also one of the actors to provide the voice of the Book in the 1979 stage production (the other being Maya Sendall). She was born in Loughborough, Leicestershire.

While the LP mostly retained the voice cast of the radio series, original Trillian actress Susan Sheridan was unavailable due to her acting commitments to the film The Black Cauldron (which also precluded her involvement in the Secondary Phase, leading to her role being filled by Lintilla, portrayed by Rula Lenska, in that series) and Oswin was cast in her place on the strength of her role in the stage production.

Notably, Oswin's version of the character is more vocal than those played by other actresses and is given more personality; most prominently, her more aggressive delivery of the line "I don't think I can stand that robot much longer, Zaphod" and her joining in the Betelgeusean death anthem with a rendition of the Beatles song "A Day in the Life" during the shootout with Shooty and Bang Bang.
