Fit the Thirteenth is the thirteenth episode or "fit" of the radio series and the first of the Tertiary Phase. It was first broadcast on 21 September 2004. It follows Fit the Twelfth and precedes Fit the Fourteenth.
Arthur Dent wakes up in a cave on prehistoric Earth. After deciding that he is going to go mad, Ford Prefect turns up and tells him this is a good idea. He also tells Arthur that there are disturbances in the space-time wash, which might allow them to escape. Arthur struggles to understand this, and Ford sees a sofa which he realises is the disturbance. They chase it down, and arrive at Lord's Cricket Ground, two million years later.
Zaphod Beeblebrox and Trillian are on the Heart of Gold. Zaphod is very hung over and refuses to leave the bathroom, even when Trillian attempts to tempt him out with a candlelit supper. Trillian is telling him that the events of the Secondary Phase were all just a pyschotic episode.
Marvin is stuck in a swamp on Sqornshellous Zeta, talking to a mattress called Zem. He is stuck walking in tiny circles because one of his legs has been replaced with a simple metal stick, which cannot bend.
