Far back in the mist of ancient time in the great and glorious days of the former Galactic Empire, life was wild, rich and on-the-whole tax free. Mighty star ships plied their way between exotic suns, seeking adventure and reward amongst the furthest reaches of galactic space. In those days, spirits were brave, the stakes were high, men were real men, women were real women and small furry creatures from Alpha Centauri were real small furry creatures from Alpha Centauri.
—The Guide on the Galactic Empire[src]

The (Imperial) Galactic Empire was an alliance of extra-terrestrial species that formed together in order to seek new endeavours. The Empire governed the galaxy, valuing exploration and excitement through interstellar journeys. The Guide depicts this as being a period of great bravery and of seeking what was unknown. The adventures were primarily self-indulgent and were done so basically in order to live life excitingly. Due to the Empire's tremendous success, the galaxy's population grew immensely wealthy, inspiring the production of custom made planets, designed to tailor the specific necessities of the galaxy's richest. All of the planets were constructed within the interior of Magrathea, a planet located in the Horsehead Nebula. As the planet forming business became so profitable that the entire galaxy was reduced to poverty in comparison to Magrathea's wealth. The galactic economy collapsed as a result, marking the end of a long-time governing force. From the ashes of the former Empire, a democratic union was formed. The galaxy has since been ruled by a series of presidents, such as Yooden Vranx and Zaphod Beeblebrox.
