Hey Jaguar, just wanted to catch up with you on how you think things have been going on the Wiki. We've gained quite a few members to our community in the last few months, and it's exciting seeing the Wiki growing and improving so fast! If you have any suggestions on things that may need improving, please let me know.
I try to engage everyone in blog posts, but it's hard for everyone to see them as there's no @ or tagging feature on Wikis (yet!). So it's good to just check in with other users, especially long term contributors, and see how things are going for them and if there's anything I can help improve!
I'm working on making a Manual of Style right now, using the things we discussed in the blog post about running the Wiki, so any suggestions for that are much appreciated! There's some things I'm thinking of asking people about, such as how we format Appearances sections as I've just been doing it the same on every article for continuity's sake, but I think maybe we might need to change the style, add an intro to the appearances as there was on some pages before we started overhauling the Wiki... it's these little things that I've not really thought about, but as we're starting to get more articles actually full of accurate content, we can start thinking about these small style changes etc!
Hi Spacepigeon, I think everything's going pretty well. I quite like the Appearances sections as they are, but I am sometimes finding what should be italicized in them confusing. I've always been italicizing book titles and sometimes Fits, but recently I've seen the Phases being italicized and I'm not completely sure which ones should be italicized where.
That's a good point! I started italizising the Phases as I saw some were already formatted that way and it made sense, but I'm not entirely sure whether they count as a form of media or not? It's a bit of a tricky thing, I checked the Wikipedia Manual of Style and Tutorial and found this: "Italics may be used for the names of books, movies, albums, and computer or video game titles." I'm guessing this also includes radio show titles, so I think the Phases need to be italicised too? I find it easiest to follow the Wikipedia guidelines as they're all already written out for us, so I think maybe we should italicise the phases too, if that sounds good to you!
Hi there! Good to see I'm not alone on here! As the forum is still archived, I'm going to make a blog post about discussing the wiki, hopefully we can figure out some basic ideas of how to run the wiki and how things need editing as there's not been any set system for a while here!
That sounds great! I've mostly been looking through the wanted pages/no-category pages/no-link pages/no-image pages to see what I can do, or just clicking random page to see if there's anything I can add, but there are probably better ways.
Haha, yes, it's a Trillian quote, I'm so glad you noticed! I'm a bit of a keen fan, lmao, but it's helpful as I have the original copies of the first two books to get quotes from, which is really enhancing the articles' information! I've seen your edits and you've been doing great work sorting out the half-completed pages and tidying them up. I really love the community feel of wikis, I just wish there were more of us around, I feel so sad I missed the creation of this wiki when it was buzzing with fans.
I've been going about things the same way to be honest, most pages I randomly click on have some typos that need fixing or need images or references added etc, and I feel bad for some of the main character pages like Trillian and Zaphod as they don't even have a biography, so I've been putting my focus on main character pages, I'm working on Ford and Trillians atm. I don't know if there's a more organised fashion to find pages in need of work than what you've been doing, it makes sense to me and it's a good way to find pages that need editing!
Blog post is on my profile page! Looking forward to seeing what you think and your suggestions. I've read wikis for ages but never worked on any myself until recently, so I'm still used to this but picking it up pretty quickly and hopefully improving this one! To be honest, I'm just enjoying having an outlet for all my useless H2G2 knowledge, lol.
