Toast is bread that has been browned by exposure to radiant heat.
In the 2005 film, on the Thursday of Earth's destruction, Arthur Dent burnt two pieces of toast while making his breakfast. Later in the film, a special heated knife is used by Trillian to make toast when sliced through a loaf of bread.
